From "Sooo excited!!!" to "So proud": using language to study development.

چکیده
We introduce a new method, differential language analysis (DLA), for studying human development in which computational linguistics are used to analyze the big data available through online social media in light of psychological theory. Our open vocabulary DLA approach finds words, phrases, and topics that distinguish groups of people based on 1 or more characteristics. Using a data set of over 70,000 Facebook users, we identify how word and topic use vary as a function of age and compile cohort specific words and phrases into visual summaries that are face valid and intuitively meaningful. We demonstrate how this methodology can be used to test developmental hypotheses, using the aging positivity effect (Carstensen & Mikels, 2005) as an example. While in this study we focused primarily on common trends across age-related cohorts, the same methodology can be used to explore heterogeneity within developmental stages or to explore other characteristics that differentiate groups of people. Our comprehensive list of words and topics is available on our web site for deeper exploration by the research community.

Understanding Personality through Social Media
In this paper, we study the relationship between language use on Twitter and personality traits. Specifically, we want to know how various linguistic features correlate with each personality trait and to what extent can we predict personality traits from language. We gather personality data from Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality test which contains thinking, feeling, sensation, int...
متن کاملAn efficient analytical solution for nonlinear vibrations of a parametrically excited beam
An efficient and accurate analytical solution is provided using the homotopy-Pade technique for the nonlinear vibration of parametrically excited cantilever beams. The model is based on the Euler-Bernoulli assumption and includes third order nonlinear terms arisen from the inertial and curvature nonlinearities. The Galerkin’s method is used to convert the equation of motion to a nonlinear ordin...
متن کاملLanguage Learners' Imagined Communities: Model and Questionnaire Development in the Iranian Context
This study aimed to overcome the researchers' extreme attention to essentially qualitative methods in research on language learners' imagined communities and move towards quantification in order to achieve a more tangible image of this construct. To do so, the present researchers followed three main phases. First, a hypothesized model of language learners' imagined communities with eight compon...
متن کاملVerification of the IBM RISC System/6000 by a Dynamic Biased Pseudo-Random Test Program Generator
Verification of a computer that implements a new architecture is especially difficult since no approved functional test cases are available. The logic design of the ISM RlSC System/SOOO" was verified mainly by a special1 developed random test program generator (RT PY G), which was used from the early stages of the design until its successful completion. APL was chosen for the RlSC System/SOOO R...
متن کاملEffect of Early Intervention on Language Development in Hearing-Impaired Children
Introduction: Hearing loss from birth up to the age of 3 years has a negative effect on speech/language development and results in sensory, cognitive, emotional, and academic defects in adulthood by causing delayed development of communicative-linguistic abilities. The present study was performed in order to assess the effect of early intervention on language development in Persian children age...
